The Importance of Seed Quality: What Every Farmer Should Know

March 24, 2026

Why Seed Quality Matters

Quality seeds can increase crop yield by 15-25% compared to farm-saved seeds. They ensure genetic purity, high germination rate, vigour, and freedom from seed-borne diseases.

Parameters of Seed Quality

Genetic Purity: Seeds should be true to type with no off-types or mixtures.

Physical Purity: Seeds should be free from inert matter, weed seeds, and seeds of other crops.

Germination: Minimum 85-90% germination is expected from quality seeds.

Moisture Content: Seeds should have optimal moisture (8-12% depending on crop) for safe storage.

How to Identify Quality Seeds

Always purchase seeds from authorized dealers. Look for the seed tag (blue for certified, white for truthful label). Check the lot number, date of test, and germination percentage on the label.

Seed Treatment

Treating seeds with fungicides (Thiram/Carbendazim) and insecticides (Imidacloprid) before sowing protects the crop in its early, vulnerable stages. Bio-agents like Trichoderma can also be used for organic approaches.
