Moong (Mung Bean) is one of the most important pulse crops in India. It matures in just 55-65 days, making it ideal for intercropping or as a catch crop. With protein content of 24-26%, it is both nutritionally and commercially valuable.
Choose varieties resistant to MYMV (Mung Bean Yellow Mosaic Virus) like Synergy Virat or Synergy SVM-55. Bold-seeded varieties command premium prices in the market.
Prepare a fine tilth with 2-3 ploughings. Sow at 30 cm row spacing with seed rate of 15-20 kg/ha. Treat seeds with Rhizobium culture for better nitrogen fixation.
Moong generally survives on monsoon rains, but one pre-sowing irrigation and one at flowering stage can significantly boost yield. Apply 20 kg N and 40 kg P2O5 per hectare at sowing.
Harvest when 80% pods turn black. Delayed harvesting leads to pod shattering and significant yield loss. Sun-dry pods for 2-3 days before threshing.
